Mplayer is a video player for mpg, avi, wmv, flv, 3gp and many more video formats. It can also play DVDs without menues. To play DVDs with menues, see vlc. This tutorial shows how to install mplayer.

Get mplayer

  • get the software to download and compile mplayer, this example is for SUSE Linux:
yast -i subversion git yasm autoconf automake make gcc-c++ zlib-devel xorg-x11-devel gtk2-devel
  • Download ("checkout") the sources
svn checkout svn:// mplayer
  • Build mplayer
cd mplayer
./configure --enable-gui && make -j8 && make install
  • Download the skin
  • Unpack the skin
tar xvjf Blue-1.10.tar.bz2
  • Install the skin
cp -R Blue /usr/local/share/mplayer/skins/default
